A non-Mormon historian of childhood examines what Mormons who were children in the 1830s through the 1850s remembered and wrote about their childhoods during those years. He found common themes that surfaced in their writing: fears of separation, times of hunger, childhood accidents and being saved by apparent miracles, etc. Often their writings and memories 'tell of the merging of religious and individual identity for an entire generation.' The upheaval that this generation of Mormon children experienced is unmatched in America except for Civil War children of the South. As this generation wrote about and tried to make sense of their childhood, they intertwined their personal identities with those of their religion. Then when the events of the 1880s and 1890s caused a crisis for the Church clustered around polygamy, this generation of Mormons had 'to shift the very sense of who they were.'
