While on a mission in France in 1850, John Taylor investigated sugar manufacturing plants in the hope of establishing a sugar industry in Utah. Toward this end, the Deseret Manufacturing Company was organized in 1851. Using drawings of equipment he had made in France, Taylor contracted to have machinery constructed in England and shipped to America in 1852. After an arduous trip transporting it to Utah, the machinery was assembled in Provo. Efforts to produce sugar in the plant were a total failure. In 1853, Brigham Young dismissed John Taylor from his position with the company. Minutes of the company reveal that although Brigham Young castigated Taylor for his poor business acumen, they were able to make a distinction between business ability and moral character and kept their friendship and brotherly relationship intact.
