Early Saints during the Joseph Smith era were little concerned with the slavery issue although LDS scriptures 'supported an acknowledgement of popular attitudes of inferiority toward blacks as having inherited the curse of God's wrath.' They chose not to engage in abolitionist activities and the antislavery statements made by Joseph Smith late in his life 'reflected political and social expedience.' The author examines the history of the race issue in RLDS history and discusses experiences of blacks in the modern RLDS church gleaned from oral interviews.
