This article chronicles the march of five companies of Mormon men, known as the Mormon Battalion, from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, 1846-47. The original company also included 33 wives and 44 children. After completing their year of service on garrison duty in San Diego, 79 reenlisted for an additional six months service. Most of the men then left for the Salt Lake Valley to reunite with their families. Some tarried at Sutter's Fort where they participated in the California gold rush. One of the battalion's greatest contributions was pioneering the wagon road which served as the southern emigrant trail to California.
