This article reviewed the opening of the Japanese Mission in 1901 and the newspaper reactions to the arrival of Mormon missionaries. Because this new religion presented unique beliefs to the Japanese people, the press often contained unusual interpretations. Freedom of religion was a frequent topic of discussion. Not all of the stories were negative, however. Eitaro Okano, a prominent journalist, was particularly helpful to the Mormon missionaries. An appendix provided a partial list of 1901 Japanese newspapers and magazines that discussed the Mormons.
