During an attempted burglary of a cabin near West Point, Iowa, two men were murdered. Charged with their murder were two Hodge brothers who were living in Nauvoo. Proclaiming their innocence, they were hung for the crime. The affair caused a break between William Smith and Brigham Young. It also cemented the idea in the minds of non-Mormons that the Mormons must be driven out of Nauvoo.
