The origins of a Heavenly Mother in Mormonism are traced back to Joseph Smith. At the turn of the century, Mormon women used Heavenly Mother to promote women's rights. In the twentieth century, Heavenly Mother is receiving increased attention throughout the Church among both men and women. The desire of some to worship a Mother in Heaven has resulted in some members having been disciplined for praying to or talking about her.
