This is the text of a sermon delivered by James Whitehead at Lamoni, Iowa, on 22 May 1887. He served as a secretary to Joseph Smith from 1842 to 1844. He describes some of his early experiences after joining the Church in Preston, England, in 1837. He was a scribe to patriarch Peter Mellun and tells some of his experiences in performing that work and in speaking in tongues. After the death of Joseph Smith, he could not accept the teaching about the adoption sealing. He describes the naming of Joseph Smith, III, to be the Prophet's successor. He attests to various teachings of the Prophet: the return to Jackson County, the second coming of Christ, the Church being led into apostasy, etc
