An examination of articles from the 'Quincy Whig' reveals that little was printed that would explain why people in Quincy were led to assist thousands of Mormon refugees in the winter of 1838-39. Rather than the newspapers directly influencing public opinion, it appears that public meetings were more influential in this regard.
