Reporting the first group of Americans to cross the trail from Salt Lake City to the Los Angeles area. Prior to the time of this newspaper article's appearance, it was thought that an emigrant party led by Amasa Lyman in 1851 was the first to make that journey. However John Hunt of Snowflake, Arizona, visited the News office and described how he was a member of a party of 18 men who were sent to California by Brigham Young in November 1847 to procure seed grain and cows. They followed a trail described to them by a trapper, 'Duff' Weber who had crossed the trail with Kit Carson a few years previously. The company went as far as the Chino ranch where they obtained their supplies.
