Leland Jorgensen joined the Utah National Guard after the United States entered World War I at the urging of General Authorities at a Young Men's conference. He was part of the 145th division of which B. H. Roberts was chaplain. He never fought in a battle, but during his several month stay in France he was sprayed by Mustard gas and infected with the Spanish influenza. He did not return home with the 145th division for unknown reasons, probably because he was required to stay in the hospital. When he did return home, his health was deteriorated. He was killed at the age of twenty-eight in a hunting accident
