Thorvaldsen was commissed to design the 'Christus' for the Lutheran Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the original still stands. Although copies of this statue have been used by several churches and organizations since, it has come to be associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church first made plans to obtain a copy of the 'Christus' in the 1950s as part of the display in the new Bureau of Information. Another copy was made for the display at the New York World's Fair. Since then, several copies of the 'Christus' have been made for permanant displays in temple visitors' centers and traveling displays at temple open houses
