Shepard visited the Tull Cemetery nine miles north of Nauvoo where he found the grave marker of Andrew Daubenheyer with the inscription that he had been 'killed by the Mormons in Sept. 1845.' He found other documentation which caused him to think that a 'virtual civil war' took place between the Mormons and non-Mormons in Hancock County in September 1845. He offers some brief reasons for this violence.
