Similarities between the revelatory experiences of Joseph Smith and Nat Turner were identified. In order to understand these similarities despite the obvious differences between the two men, Brodhead placed them in the broader context of self-proclaimed prophets arising during the same time. These included: Jemima Wilkinson, Ann Lee, Joseph Dylks, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson and Smith produced two widely different movements. While Emerson eventually rejected organized religion and sacramental ordinances, Smith proclaimed to have the authority and the ordinances restored through revelations and angelic visits.
