Smoot gave this speech at a Lexington (Missouri) Historical Association banquet. The banquet was held to commemorate the destruction of the Saluda in Lexington, Missouri in 1852. Smoot gives biographical information about Abraham O. Smoot and writes that Smoot had advised the Saints against chartering the Saluda. He also refused to take passage on that steamboat, but, he was nearby when it exploded and thus left a witness of what happened.
