William B. Preston served for twenty years as Presiding Bishop of the Church. He also served as president of the Cache Valley Stake, as a missionary in England, as mayor of Logan, and in the territorial legislature. He was married to Harriet Thatcher for fifty years. Excerpts from their letters while he served as a missionary and as the head of out-and-back companies are included in this article. He was a native of Virginia and joined the Church in California.
