A hymn festival was presented in the Kirtland Temple on Sunday, 25 May 2003, as the closing session of the Mormon History Association annual conference. Ten hymns from the 1835 Kirtland hymnal were sung, including the six hymns used at the dedication service in 1836, with their original tunes. . . .Before each hymn was sung, its background information was read by a member of the assembly. [editorial note taken from article] The article contains a transcript of this meeting and the music of the hymns sung. The following hymns are discussed: 'Redeemer of Israel,' 'Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,' 'How Firm a Foundation,' ' Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah,' 'O Happy Souls Who Pray,' 'How Pleased and Blest Was I,' 'This Earth Was Once a Garden Place,' 'E'er Long the Veil Will Rend in Twain,' 'Now Let Us Rejoice,' and 'The Spirit of God Like A Fire Is Burning.'
