The story of politics in early Utah centers around the quest for statehood and the practice of polygamy. Though the first attempt for statehood was made in 1849, it wasn't until 1896, after polygamy had been discontinued, that Utah was admitted to the Union. Lott suggests that perhaps the most interesting aspect of Utah politics is the way it affected individuals and impacted families. A greater effort needs to be made to preserve personal political stories and accounts.
