Though most Americans viewed Latter-day Saint women in the late 1800s as 'defenseless' and 'slaving,' they knew little of the strength, independence, fortitude, and courage of pioneer women like Eliza Snow, Sarah Kimball, Rachel Grant, and Phoebe Woodruff. Such women were active and involved in civic affairs and had been voting in elections since 1870, long before women in any other state. Though they had to fight to regain the franchise after it was revoked by Congress in 1887, they nevertheless did much to shape, influence, and improve their communities through political participation
