Matheson recounts the events surrounding the establishment of the two-party political system in Utah. The perception of U. S. leaders in the 1800s was that the territory was being ruled by the Church. Consequently, the People's Party was disbanded, and members were encouraged to join either the Republican or Democratic parties. Church leaders divided their loyalties between the two, creating a balanced political scene and facilitating the acceptance of Utah as a state. Matheson suggests that much can be learned from 'pioneering politics' which focused on 'pulling together for the good of people.'
