Hill compares the attitude toward Mormons among many non-Mormons in Hancock County in 1844 with that of the Southerners in 1860 toward the Republicans. He identifies a point of consensus that bound together the group of non-Mormons from Warsaw and Carthage and follows up with a discussion of the ideological issues that divided the Mormons and non-Mormons. Finally, he gives an account of the events leading up to the murder and examines some of the fears and grievances expressed by those accused of the murder.
