Josephine Spencer (1861-1928) was an author, poet, and journalist. She was atypical of her time in Utah in that she never married and had a successful career in an unusual occupation for a Utah woman at that time. Unfortunately, she did not leave an account of her personal life. Spencer's writings are analyzed in an attempt to uncover the personal life of this 19th-century Mormon woman. While most Mormon literature and poetry tended to be didactic, Spencer's writing tended toward realism. She also wrote about socialism.
