The Mormon culture region underwent great changes between 1880 and 1920. The Americanization process shifted the balance of power to non-Mormons. Despite having to bend to the nation's will over the issue and practice of polygamy, some unique Mormon practices persisted and a regional distinctiveness was retained. This unique sense of region was reworked by the Mormons to perpetuate their identity while simultaneously making them acceptable to the nation. The author employs Mormon literature to demonstrate how the Mormons transformed the moral order, wealth, and their perception as loyal Americans
