Atchison, Kansas, in its infancy in 1855, became the primary outfitting post for the Mormon emigrants in that year. Although only in the vicinity for a few months, the Mormons literally jump-started the town's economy and helped it to become a key outfitting place for freighters and other people who traveled overland. While there, the Mormons laid out and planted a farm for those too poor to continue to Utah to live in after the bulk of the migrants departed. After their departure, the poor Mormons were evicted by Kansas squatters who took advantage of the Saints' poverty and ignorance. Many of the emigrants died in the area from cholera
