Washing clothes was deemed to be women's work by men during the Gold Rush. There is a brief account of a company that had their laundry washed by Mormon women during a brief stop in Salt Lake City. One of the boys in the company was so enamored over the appearance of one Mormon girl 'that he declared himself almost ready to embrace--the Mormon faith.' (p. 5)
