In 1875, Mark Twain appealed to the federal court in Salt Lake City to stop the performance of a play based upon his book, 'The Gilded Age,' at the Salt Lake Theatre. The adapted play had been written without regard for his copyright and without any offer to pay him a royalty. The play was not performed and the court recognized his copyright
