Topping reviewed the struggle of the Catholic Church to establish regular care and congregations for its members in Southeastern Utah. The first white settlers in the area were Mormon colonists. They drew Hispanic Catholics to the area as agricultural laborers. Other Catholics moved into the region with the coming of the railroad and the opening of several mines. In 1957, Charles Redd, a Mormon, donated a building in LaSal to be used for Mass. He later donated land on which to build a permanent chapel
