Kane's early work in helping the Mormons politically with the establishment of the Mormon Battalion and in their quest for territorial self-government is discussed. There is evidence that Pres. Polk secretly designed to 'involve the Mormons in wresting California from the Mexicans.' After meeting the Mormons and becoming a close friend, he worked tirelessly as an emissary in their behalf to try to obtain territorial self-rule. In order to be effective in the Church's behalf, he had to appear to others to be detached and not closely associated with the Mormons
