This study is an attempt to examine the cultural aspects of the development of the Utah Territory (1850-1896) as part of a further attempt to illuminate more clearly patterns of cultural development upon the American frontier during the last half of the 19th century. I have chosen this study primarily because students of American intellectual history have neglected the Great Basin area of the western United States in their analysis of American thought even though the history of this inland mountain empire is replete with experiences which are typically American in nature.
