"Camilla Clara Mieth Cobb, born in Germany in 1843, emigrated at age 13 with her sister Anna and Anna's husband, Karl G. Maeser, to the United States and eventually to Utah. During her time with the Maesers, Karl G. Maeser, who had studied child-centered teachings, tutored Cobb and served as her educational mentor. In 1874, Cobb traveled to Newark, New Jersey to study kindergartening under Dr. Adolph Douai, a Froebelian educator. Upon her return, she established the first kindergarten in Utah which she operated for two years. Cobb continued to teach and work with young children for most of her adult life, including 37 years of service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Primary Association, an organization for children that patterned much of its pedagogical practices after the kindergarten."
