"The relationship between church and state in Utah has been the object of much discussion and debate. Investigators of the topic have both illuminated and obscured the true nature of the relationship since it originated in 1847. It is the intention of this work to examine the contemporary relationship that exists between the LDS Church and the political process in the state of Utah. The major sources of information about the role of the Church in Utah politics are the numerous oral interviews conducted by the author over the last four years. These interviews are firsthand accounts of elected officials, politicians, journalists and lobbyists about their personal experiences involving church and state in Utah. The issue of religion in American politics is an issue which can arouse the greatest passions. The question in Utah is little different. As a result, the organization of this work reflects the author's attempt to make the subject as dispassionate and rational as possible. The approach is to provide the reader with an adequate background on the subject before dealing with the contemporary nature of the topic. The first chapter helps lay this groundwork by reviewing the varied literature in print about the Mormon Church and Utah politics. Chapter two is a brief history of the LDS Church's involvement in Utah politics from 1847 to 1945. The third chapter details the impact of the Church on the political process in Utah since 1945. Included in the topics are the specific issues the Church became involved in, an analysis of the state's voting patterns and an evaluation of the religious affiliation of elected officials. Chapter four deals with the impact and influence of the Church on the legislative process of the state. What formal and informal ties does the LDS Church have with the legislative branch of government. Chapter five concludes this work with an analysis and evaluation of the role the Church plays on the governing process in the state, as experienced by many of the individuals involved. Utah's unique political history offers an unusual subject for researchers. It is hoped this examination will help to further the understanding of how church and state operate in Utah."
