"This study chronicles the history of the feature dramatic presentation of Hawaii's Polynesian Cultural Center, the Night Show, and analyzes the significant events and contributors to the show with emphasis on its purposes--to display and preserve authentic Polynesian culture and to provide work for the students of neighboring BYU-Hawaii. The study finds that the Center succeeds because of the unique blend of the large numbers of Polynesian college students, the non-profit support of the Mormon Church, and the richly diverse Polynesian cultures. The study finds that qualified Polynesians need to be more prominently involved in the leadership of the Center and of the Night Show. Greater effort needs to be given to establishing guidelines for the cultural content of the Night Show. To that end, an organized program to document Polynesian rituals, both past and present, needs to be established. Through anthropological course studies, the performers need to be imbued with Polynesian culture beyond the present scope of the Night Show." [Author's abstract]
