"In 1959, The Autobiography of Cecil B. DeMille was published, some months after the death of the legendary producer-director. Edited by long time associate Donald Hayne, the book met with favorable critical reception. This study traces the development of the book from its active inception in 1952 involving Hayne and two years later when DeMille's Executive Assistant for The Ten Commandments, Art Arthur, was assigned to head the project, to its final publication. Through tape recorded interviews of DeMille by Arthur, and later editing of and altering the original manuscripts by Donald Hayne, the autobiography emerged to DeMille associates as not truly representative in many respects of the man as they knew him to have been in life."
