"I have searched approximately forty-three books and journals and interviewed several people. As I began to collect lore, I decided to avoid establishing rigid categories, hoping to make groupings based upon the materials themselves. Lore about Indians, Mormon lore, and pioneer reminiscences provided abundant information. While most of the Bear Lake settlers were of yeoman and middle class stock, they were strong, hardy, and of superior faith, and few were of rather sophisticated origin. All this and much more is manifested in the lore gathered. Their ethnic identity is assured in that they have suffered together, that they now live together, and hope together. Their folklore makes this explicitly clear, thus vindicating this study." [Author]
