"The history of the Mormon Church in Brazil is divided into three periods. The first, beginning in 1928, was one of limited development of small localized units in which the influence and role of American missionaries was paramount. The second period starting in the mid-1950s saw a change in attitude towards Brazil by Church authorities in the United States, accompanied by the development of some large congregations under the administrative control of Brazilian lay members. The third period between 1966 and 1978 saw regional institutional development, the establishment of a Brazilian secular bureaucracy and the evolution of a Brazilian Morman consciousness. During the fifty year history of Mormonism in Brazil certain characteristics were prevalent. The Church generally attracted young urban converts from transitional and lower middle classes who saw in Mormonism a religion offering a theology, organization and social structure they felt were oriented to a modern industrial society. Secondly, institutional development in Brazil evolved under a dependent relationship with Church headquarters in the United States. This dependency was maintained through the continuous presence of young American missionaries, the control of American administrators, and the creation of a Brazilian elite and local secular bureaucracy linked to and under the control of the central Church bureaucracy."
