"Liahona The Elders' Journal was the official publication for all the Mormon missions of North America for almost four decades. In its prime it had a circulation of close to 20,000 readers. Ben E. Rich founded the magazine in 1903 as a bulletin for the Southern States Mission, and entitled it simply The Elders' Journal. Four years later it merged with a similar publication called the The Liahona to become Liahona The Elders' Journal (usually shortened to the Liahona). At this time its place of publication also changed from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Independence, Missouri. Although during World War I individual missions began publishing their own distinct bulletins, nevertheless the Liahona remained the only magazine to serve all the American missions until it ceased publication. Duplication with other periodicals coupled with continued financial problems eventually led to its demise in 1945. Notwithstanding during its lifetime, it was an effective aid to missionary work and a source of edification and comfort to missionaries and members." [Author's abstract]
