This essay is about the conflict between Joseph Smith Jr. and his brother William over a debate school founded by William. The school was created so that Elders in the Church could debate questions about theology. Joseph wanted the school closed after there was contention amongst the Elders due to their differing opinions, and because the focus of the school seemed to be debate, not the Gospel. William wanted the school to stay open so that the Elders could continue debating, this paper includes letters written between William and Joseph on the matter of the school.
