"This thesis is a study of the early beginnings of Utah during the period of 1847-1851. It is, therefore, primarily a history of the Mormon activity in Salt Lake City and the Great Basin, for the beginnings of Utah and the story of the Mormons in those regions are synonymous... In this study I have attempted to portray a fair and unbiased picture of the Mormon society and activities in Utah prior to the final organization of the Territorial government in September of 1851. I have first described the founding of Great Salt Lake City. Then the main features of the economic and social system of the Mormons have been presented." [author]
