The First Ten Years of Latter Day Saint Hymnody : A Study of Emma Smith's 1835 and Little and Gardner's 1844 Hymnals
University of Massachusetts, Lowell
The Emma Smith 1835 and the Little & Gardner 1844 hymnals are examined from the perspectives of text origin, text content, and text writers. There are brief histories of the Latter-day Saint hymn text authors. In addition, possible hymn tunes are suggested for the Smith hymnal by identifying tunes used by other denominations for the same texts as well as comparing these tunes with the notated tunes in the Little & Gardner hymnal. The influence of the Smith hymnal on the other Latter Day Saint hymnals of the period is also examined.
