The Mormon church introduced beets to Utah. Sugar companies mirrored the Mormon church in hierarchical structure as well as ubiquity. These companies had an incredible range of control over growers which led to a permanent tension between farmer and factory. This paper traces the response of beet growers to this intense paternalism peculiar to beet culture and complicated by the involvement of the Church.
