"As I researched Mormon women and their writing, I came to admire a number of them on many counts--particularly Juanita Brooks, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Emma Lou Thayne, Margaret Blair Young, and Phyllis Barber. I respect these women for their spirituality, their integrity, and their courage as writers. They disclose information that reveals an acceptance of humanness and an awareness of the need for people to share honest stories. They demonstrate and encourage a more honest storytelling in the community of Latter-day Saints. As Carolyn Heilbrun advocates in Writing A Woman's Life , these women take risks, make noise, are courageous, and become, in ways, unpopular. According to Carol Christ in Diving Deep and Surfacing: Women Writers on Spiritual Quest, women like these "correctly understand that...redemption comes from facing the truth and accepting the pain, guilt, and responsibility it entails."
