Master's thesis
-
"This thesis examines William Heth Whitsitt's study of the origins of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Chapter 1 discusses the methodology and background which led to the writing of this thesis. It also summarizes Whitsitt's most significant contributions to the discussion of Mormon origins. Chapter 2 provides some historical background on the key individuals and movements discussed in Whitsitt's work. Chapter 3 examines Whitsitt's view of Sidney Rigdon's role in the founding of Mormonism. Chapter 4 examines Whitsitt's view of Sidney Rigdon's influence in the theology of early Mormonism and the Book of Mormon. Chapter 5 summarizes the evidence for and against Whitsitt's arguments and offers some conclusions. Finally, a discussion of the similarities between Whitsitt's work and the Cowdery Defence is also included in an appendix." [Author's abstract]
