'Brigham City and Corinne, Utah, were situated geographically close but ideologically distant. Brigham City was the model Mormon community of isolation and cooperation; Corinne was the non-Mormon capital founded to destroy Mormonism and integrate Utah's economy. This thesis compares the differences between the two towns, and examines the mutually beneficial relationships that developed between them. The two rival communities differed greatly during the initial years of settlement. The differences led to conflict and cold-war hostility between the communities. Despite the animosity and differences, a remarkable cooperation formed between the two towns, based upon mutual needs and the self-interest of residents. These interactions--coupled with the imposition of local and national trends--broke down the differences and created two Utah towns nearly perfectly resembling each other.' (author's abstract)
