'The Mormon community of Cache Valley, in the north of Utah, increasingly stratified along class lines throughout the 1860s. An economic elite, whose standing in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seemingly contributed to its wealth, became increasingly richer relative to most Cachians. The entrepreneurial residents of Cache Valley sought a market for cash crops in mining towns outside of Utah, and a supply of manufactured goods in the American marketplace. This occurred despite church leaders, persistent calls for Mormons to become self-sufficient, cooperative, and isolated from American society. By the 1870s, several church initiatives to encourage the people of Utah to adopt these practices failed, and Cache Valley established for itself a secure place in the United States economy.'
