'Officially inaugurated in 1993, The Sacred Music Series at Ricks College, now Brigham Young University-Idaho, constitutes an emerging body of newly created oratorio-like choral/orchestral music composition. Within this series, composers are nominated biennially and selected to create a work based on sacred themes from the body of scripture revered by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This dissertation examines the works currently comprising this series. Within this study, two works, K. Newell Dayley's Immanuel and Daniel E. Gawthrop's The Passion and the Promise of Our Lord Jesus Christ, provide the basis for introducing the series and offer points for comparison. Other works in the series, including Crawford Gates' Visions of Eternity, Robert Cundick's Song of Nephi, and Merrill Jenson's Come Unto Christ, will supply the balance of the discussion through brief description and classification. This study provides the reader an opportunity to become better acquainted with the series through narrative and descriptive analysis. In addition, general attributes, comparisons, and findings will promote further study and aid in future performance of these works.' (author's abstract)
