"Paradigm shifts or ideological changes in ethnic religious adults were investigated. A national sample of Mormons and Ex-Mormons (93 females, 9 males) responded to a written questionnaire that included demographic, objective, and subjective items. The subjects were assigned to five groups based on the dimensions of sharing/not sharing Mormon paradigm concepts and participating/not participating with the Mormon religious community. Three propositions derived from paradigm theory were tested and accepted: Proposition #1 tested the concept that paradigms are stressed before changes occur; Proposition #2 tested the concept that perceived benefits of differentiating from a consensus-sensitive group are related to inner control, and Proposition #3 tested the concept that perceived costs of differentiating from an ethnic religious group are related to the disruption of social bonds. The data were analyzed by a method that incorporated a computer spreadsheet and wordprocessing program. Raw data for the question concerning the costs and benefits of religious change are included in the Appendix of the dissertation." [Author's abstract]
