"This study has three specific purposes: first, to discover what factors in the Latter-day Saint movement produced a distinctive hymnody; second, to identify the contribution made by hymns to the development of the movement; and third, to determine whether this contribution or role was altered as the Chruch matured. In accomplishing these purposes the study endeavors to shed further light on the emotional life of a dynamic, religious group, and to suggest opportunities for future hymn book revision." [Author]
