History of Latter-day Saint settlement in Graham County, Arizona. Originally Latter-day Saints attempted to colonize northern Arizona (according to Brigham Young's vision for settlement throughout the Intermountain West) but found it unsuitable and moved southward, with many settling in the Gila Valley in the late 1870's through the 1880's. With the passing of the Edmunds-Tucker Act in 1882, migration to Arizona increased due to anti-polygamy persecution. This wave of migration sparked economic growth and Latter-day Saints became a major presence in Graham County.
