A description and defense of the Church Welfare Plan as implemented during the Great Depression. The Plan was focused on self-reliance and opportunities to work and succeeded at sustaining life while removing members from dependence on federal "direct relief." It was grounded in the principles of the Gospel. The church provided jobs to unemployed members in agricultural projects, Temple construction, and other construction projects as well as aid to those in crisis.
