A study of the political career of Reed Smoot, from the Smoot hearings between 1904 and 1906 onwards. As a staunch Republican who supported both women's suffrage and protectionist tariffs, Smoot became well-known and well-respected throughout the country. As he was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ, the Church made efforts to encourage members to vote their minds irrespective of Smoot's status as a Church leader.
